First published in 1962, Negroes with Guns is the story of a African community’s struggle in North Carolina to arm itself in self-defense against the Ku Klux Klan and other racist groups. Frustrated and angered by violence condoned or abetted by the local authorities against African people, the small community of Monroe, North Carolina, brought the issue of armed self-defense to the forefront of the civil rights movement.
Robert F. Williams continues to inspire the editors of C-101 everyday. He was the epitome of resistance. Robert had no desire to debase himself and deny his Blackness in order to assimilate into U.S. society. Check out his unapologetic interview in our video library.
